The first thing we do is match the stock main jet to its corresponding numbered drill bit. Search Engines. Drilling Main Jets Deciding which main jets to buy to tune your carburetor can be a difficult task. You may not know what jet size would be a good starting point for your combination. Why buy a bunch of main jets based on a guess when you may not ever use them again?
By drilling out your stock main jet to larger sizes you will be able to narrow down what jet size your carburetor needs. You will need a numbered drill bit set. We purchased this set from Harbor Freight. The brass main jets are easy to drill so you can get by with one of these inexpensive drill bit sets. Run the engine with the stock main jet and take a plug reading. If it's lean and you need to increase the size of your main jet, drill the jet out with the next size larger drill bit, which in this case is the 60 bit.
Run the engine again with the drilled out main jet and take another plug reading. Repeat this process until you get a good plug reading. See our " Carburetor Tuning " section to learn more about plug readings. Do not skip drill bit sizes because once you drill the main jet too large, you cannot go back to a smaller size.
You should use a drill press for drilling your main jet. You will need a vice with jaws that will hold the main jet perpendicular to the drill bit. You do not want the drill bit to enter the main jet at an angle because it could create an oblong hole in your jet. Once you drill the main jet to a size that gives you a good plug reading you can use the chart below to determine what size the jet is. Flywheels on today's small engines serve several other purposes. The fins help cool the engine by distributing air around the engine block.
The fins also blow air across the air vane on a pneumatic governor, maintaining the desired engine speed see Governor System. Magnets mounted on the outside surface of the flywheel are required for ignition. On engines with starter motors, lights or other devices, magnets mounted inside and outside are at the heart of the electrical system.
Finally, if a lawn mower or tiller blade hits a rock or curb, the flywheel key can sometimes absorb the damage, reducing repair costs significantly. Always check for damage by removing the flywheel to inspect the key and the keyway, the key's slot on the crankshaft. The soft metal key must eliminate play between the flywheel and crankshaft. Never strike the flywheel.
Even a slightly damaged flywheel presents a safety hazard and must be replaced. Place the flywheel on the crankshaft and look through the flywheel hub to align the keyways on the flywheel and crankshaft. With the flywheel in place, place the key in the keyway; it should fit securely. Debris can also prevent the key from seating in the keyway.
Once the key and flywheel are securely in place, reattach the flywheel nut or clutch. Consult your authorized dealers for the torque specifications for your make and model.

Our goal is to advance our timing 8 degrees. We know every. Therefore if we file off. We put the key in a vice with the flat side of the key up and the rounded portion down. We used to sell timing keys already filed however it's easy enough to do this with your stock key in less than half an hour. Here is the correct orientation of the advance timing key.
The step you filed into the key is on the left. Now when you install the flywheel you will gently rotate it clockwise until it contacts the key. This will leave a little gap on the other side of the flywheels keyway.
We suggest sticking a toothpick in that gap so the flywheel does not roll back counterclockwise when you tighten the flywheel nut. Modified motor ran well but need some more top end and when loaded seemed a bit weak. On my car I would have advanced the distributor. I looked at the offset key option or the Vegas Carts timing advance. I chose the timing advance because it was an easy install and only took about 20 minutes to complete. I set the timing at 6 degrees advanced and WOW could not believe the difference.
Starts better, huge increase in throttle response and better top end performance. In addition it was a beautifully machined part that fit well and easy to install with the engine in the cart.
